How to Protect Your Air Conditioning Unit from Storm Damage

A storm can severely damage AC units. It’s important to know what to do to protect your outdoor air conditioning unit before a threat arises.

1. Keep your yard tidy. Dirt leaves and other debris can get stuck inside your air conditioning unit and cause severe damage. Keep a clearing with a radius of at least three feet around your unit. Although it’s a good idea to plant certain trees nearby the unit to provide shade and help with energy efficiency, be sure that any leaves or branches that fall off are removed immediately.

2. Hail is one of the most common causes of damage to outdoor AC units, along with any dirt and debris that can be blown into the interior of the unit by strong winds. It’s a good idea to cover the unit with hail guards or a canvas cover just before a storm in order to protect it. Be sure not to use the heater or air conditioner until the cover is removed after the storm.

3. If your home is located in a lower area where flooding may occur, be sure that the air conditioner is installed on an elevated level, possibly even the roof. Find out the extent of flood threat for your particular area when making this decision and save yourself from costly water damage that could occur to your AC unit otherwise.
